Speculative Fiction Workshop

  • Nashville Public Library 615 Church Street Nashville, TN, 37219 United States (map)

The writer's task is to work from the pallet of reality, but also to reshape reality using imagination. In that sense, writers are constantly speculating. When our fiction takes a cue from the realm of fantasy, futurism, or the supernatural, it becomes categorically "speculative." In this workshop, we will focus on the use of speculation in literary writing. What do modern examples teach us about "if + then" story structure? How can we use careful speculation to aim for truth, beauty, and emotional resonance? Let’s find out together.
