Poetic Empathy

Some writers say that every poem is a love poem. But this isn't a class to prepare you for saccharine words to share on Valentine's Day. We're talking about the kind of love that's essential to the poetic voice: empathy. In a time when people feel divided and perception presented as reality, it's the work of the poet to point towards something more true. We'll read and write poems specifically focusing on empathy as an act of imagination that leads to something very real.

Ciona Rouse is a poet living in Nashville with her dog, her cat, and her Patrick. She curates several poetry reading series around the city. Ciona has covered a story in the White House press room, hula hooped two half marathons, and stepped out of the car on safari not far from lions. Her favorite game is Two Truths & a Lie, but this bio isn't playing that game. Or is it?
